My son was a child who never wanted to sleep – neither during the day nor at night. I was 25 at the time, exhausted and sleep-deprived. Sleep problems affect both parents and children. That’s when I decided to make a change. I talked to other moms, looked for advice, read and researched. And I succeeded.
In this article, I will share 7 proven tips that can help your child fall asleep, supported by scientific research. They worked for my children, and I hope they will help you too.

1. Physical activity during the day

For a child to be ready for sleep in the evening, they need to use up their energy during the day. The best way is outdoor play – jumping, running, riding a bike. It’s enough to take your child to the park, sit on a bench, and watch them enjoy active interaction with their peers.
Active play + fresh air = a happy and tired child who falls asleep more easily at night.

2. Food and drinks

If you want your child to fall asleep easily and sleep soundly, pay attention to nutrition. In the afternoon and evening, avoid giving them foods or drinks with caffeine and sugar as these increase energy and alertness. Heavy dinners should also be avoided since they can disturb sleep (this goes for parents too!).

3. Consistent bedtime routine

Children love predictability, and when they have a routine, they feel safe. A bedtime routine – bath, pajamas, storytime or lullaby – helps a child relax and connect these activities with sleep. Research shows that sleep problems in young children can improve within just a few nights of a consistent bedtime routine.

4. Limiting blue light

TVs, phones, and tablets should not be in the child’s bedroom. An hour or two before bedtime, avoid screen time altogether. Blue light from these devices slows down the production of melatonin – the sleep hormone. This is the perfect time for calm activities like those mentioned in tip 3.

5. Comfortable and calm sleep environment

The room where a child sleeps should be at a comfortable temperature, quiet, dark, and well-aired. If your child is afraid of the dark, use a dim night light.
A cozy atmosphere = better sleep.

6. Light clothing

Pajamas and bedding should be made of natural materials, appropriate for the season and room temperature. Uncomfortable clothing or overheating can disturb sleep.

7. Parental presence and independent falling asleep

This is often a debated topic.
Research shows that when parents stay until the child falls asleep, it can lead to more frequent night wakings. The best solution is balance. Offer closeness by telling a bedtime story or singing a lullaby, and then encourage your child to fall asleep independently.
If it’s a baby, instead of picking them up when they cry, try soothing with gentle patting, words, or singing. For older children, a stuffed animal or a night light can help if they are afraid of the dark. Within just a few days, children can learn to fall asleep on their own.

Conclusion:

There is no magic formula, but a combination of physical activity, healthy nutrition, a consistent bedtime routine, and a calm environment is proven to help children fall asleep more easily and sleep more soundly.
